Raised in Sydney, Australia on a super-diet of cartoons, comic books, and sci-fi movies, James Patradoon constructs giant candy coloured screen-prints and posters you can admire and adore but cannot devour. He is weird, wonderful, well-read and a whole lot more so we decided to send Errin Fawcett out on a mission to expose the creative artist he really is.

First off, who are you, what do you do and why?
My name is James Patradoon, I'm an artist. I make work about contemporary masculinities and sometimes I use my drawing skills for illustration to pay the bills. I don't know why I do what I do, it is just the kind of art that I would like to see I guess, no one else is going to make it. I like being able to do what I love, it is a real privilege. I'd be cheating myself if I didn't.

At what age did you start creating your art?
I think everybody started drawing when they were young, whether they be accountants or artists, every kid drew. Some of us stopped and others kept going. I draw the same subject matter I used to draw as a kid - made-up superheroes. I only started getting attention for my work maybe last year?

What influences you the most?
Cartoons and comics. The impossible worlds where a used car salesman can snap one day and create an international terrorist army from the ground up. Where an angry rich kid can use his dead parents' inheritance to buy himself enough secret army equipment to become a superhero. I love these worlds where anything is possible - here people don't lead ordinary lives and do ordinary things.

I love how these fictional worlds can inspire and shape the real world itself, when things bleed together like in Who Framed Roger Rabbit and life imitates art.

“If I had a superpower I'd love to be able to create multiples of myself”

Is there any historical or contemporary artist that you specifically admire? And why?
Raymond Pettibon. His work is everything I love about making art. Seeing his work is the reason why I have one foot in the fine art world in the first place and haven't dedicated myself solely to illustration. He has so many ideas running through him and his method of working is the perfect outlet for him. He is so prolific and hard working, I admire his approach to art making. I am influenced by many illustrators, too many to mention, but as far as actual fine artists go Raymond Pettibon is my all time favorite.

What is your favorite medium for making images?
I studied printmaking at art school and specialized in screen-printing. I did that for four years. The problem with printmaking is that you need a lot of equipment to actually make prints. Of course, I didn't realize that until after I graduated. I found myself unable to produce any work. It is a beautiful medium but it is impractical for me, I see it as a ball and chain. I once spoke with Anthony Lister about his art practice and as a painter he can travel anywhere he likes and make art wherever he goes as long as he has paint and a wall or canvas, I envy that freedom that painters have, I am probably going to start making paintings from now on.

Are you addicted to the American TV series Heroes? If you had a super power what would it be and why?
I tried to watch Heroes after a lot of my friends recommended it to me but I couldn't get past the first episode. I might give it a chance later when I'm not so busy, I don't have much time for TV anymore. If I had a superpower I'd love to be able to create multiples of myself like Madrox the Multiple Man from X-Factor. In life you never really get the time to do everything you want to do, maybe if there were eight or twenty of me I could at least try. I want to take a drawing course, join the army, earn some money, sleep, and travel more, I want to do all that immediately.

Where would you travel and why the hell would you want to join the army?
I'd like to go to Mosco because it is so mysterious to me. I have friends who find South East Asia 'so foreign' and out of their comfort zone, that is the same feeling I get about Russia, which is why I'd love to hurl myself there. It sounds like a scary place, I don't know if it is such a good idea - but it is something I often think about. I like to travel to mythic cities like Tokyo and New York and Bangkok.

The next place I go will probably be Barcelona - I have heard so many amazing things about it - some friends lived there for a year and they haven’t stopped raving on about it since they returned.

The army was something my Dad always scared me with as a kid if I ever failed classes. He would be like "If you don't go well in this exam I am sending you to the army." I was always petrified with the idea of being shipped off to the army. The work I make is about contemporary masculinities so I am interested in the romanticism of the army, you know, that whole thing about having no direction in life and signing up to join the army and coming out the other end a 'real man'. I'm very curious about that whole process. Henry Rollins and Maynard James Keenan were in the army for a while - but they hated it.

A lot of your images feature an angry masked bandit (or is he a hero?).Why is this? What is his name? And how did you come up with hiscreation?
He's a bit of both, it is ambiguous. He is the alter ego i created for myself to showcase my masculine and aggressive side (that lacks in my real life). My work plays with ideas of gender performance, by separating him from me and giving him a mask I tried suggest that the act of proving masculinity is all for show. It is a facade, a mask.

“I think the kids at the JJ markets are the coolest in the world”

Tell us about your use of colour? (You seem to use a lot of blues and pinks)
It started out as just a joke. When i started drawing really violent images I found that I liked the way that adding pink would make the work a bit ambiguous. People would tell me "It would look better in another colour, why pink?? Pink is so gay!" but I find it interesting how things can be so masculine that they become camp, like wrestling and bikers for instance. It goes in a circle.

Which of your paintings has given you the most gratification of your career? Which is your favorite piece and why?
Probably 'She Was A Spy'. When i started screen-printing it everything went wrong and I was so frustrated that I nearly tore the edition up! I tucked it in my drawer and decided to work on it later. At the end of the year I took it back out and finished it and now it is my favourite from the series because it reminds me of the best and worst parts of being an artist. It is also one of the few horizontal images I have made, I had the working proof pinned up in my bedroom for a year.

Have you ever had an exhibition in Bangkok?
Never, BUT I WOULD LOVE TO. I love the Bangkok vibe. I think the kids at the JJ markets are the coolest in the world and I have seen kids from Japan and New York, none compare. Thai teenagers are gritty, unpretentious, yet stylish. Last time i went I spent days in the vintage section of JJ, such an inspiration. It is so damn hot but they still manage to look good. I wish that people knew that Bangkok wasn't just about pirated movies and Khaosan road. There is so much cool stuff happening there I can't wait to go back.

What training do you have?
I went to the College of Fine Arts UNSW in Sydney and graduated with First Class Honors. I know screen-printing really well, but it doesn't help me much unless I have all the equipment, which costs THOUSANDS. I wish I did more painting and drawing classes. I go to life drawing every week and plan to go to do a drawing course soon.

Which challenges do you confront as an artist?
Staying motivated is the hardest thing. Complacency and laziness are your worst enemies as an artist. It is good to surround yourself with other artists to stay motivated and get some feedback. Often people who don't do art will just keep telling you to get a real job and things like that.

What other interests do you have (besides painting)?
I don't really have any other interests, I guess everything comes back to art anyway, be it video games, movies, or fashion. Everything I expose myself to directly influences my art making. I enjoy sleeping a lot these days. It is the only peace I get.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
In ten years I'd be 33. Gosh. I have no idea. There is so much stuff i want to do, ten years doesn't seem that far off at all. I should probably start.

ณ ดินแดนแห่งหนึ่ง......ดินแดนที่ดูคลุมเครือระหว่างความฝันหรือความจริง การคาบเกี่ยวของอดีต, ปัจจุบันและอนาคต มิติแห่งเวลากลายเป็นสิ่งที่ถูกละเลย ที่ที่โรบอทสามารถหลั่งน้ำตาได้ พอๆกับที่มนุษย์รู้จักการสตาร์ฟความเยาว์วัยของตนเอง เพียงเพื่อจะเก็บออมฝันกลางวันในฤดูร้อนนั้นไว้ชั่วนิรันด์

ขอ ต้อนรับทุกท่านสู่ DAFT PUNK and Friends in NEVEREVERLAND, Australia Tour 2007 ด้วยความบังเอิญ หรือ โชคชะตาฟ้าลิขิต ที่ทำให้เราได้มีโอกาสไปดูคอนเสิร์ตของ Daft Punk และผองเพื่อนไกลถึงประเทศออสเตรเลีย การนับวันรอคอย, การเดินทางไกลหลายพันไมล์ การต่อคิวยาวเหยียด และเบียดเสียดกับผู้คนคนคับคั่ง ไม่เคยมีความหมายเท่านี้มาก่อน ระยะเวลาเพียง 10 ปีเท่านั้นเอง นับจากผลงานอัลบั้มชุดแรกของพวกเขา Home Work (โปรดักชั่นส่วนใหญ่ของพวกเขา ทำกันในห้องนอน!)

สองหนุ่มวัยละ อ่อน Thomas Bangalter และ Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo คู่ดูโอทางดนตรี Electronic นำดนตรี (ชื่อน่าเกลียดในช่วงเวลานั้น) French House มาเขย่าโลก ร่วมขบวนกับกลุ่มนักดนตรีหัวสมัยก้าวหน้าจากฝรั่งเศส (เช่น I:CUBE, Alex Gopher, Slam, Laurent Gainer, Cassius เป็นต้น) ที่จุดประกาย และสร้างปรากฏการณ์ทางดนตรีมากมาย (ไอเดียการตลาด สุดล้ำ, Music VDO โดยผู้กำกับระดับเซียน, อิมเมจ และภาพลักษณ์ที่ติดตา, DVD หนัง หรือแม้กระทั่งของเล่น ฯลฯ พวกเขาทำให้เกิดศิลปินและค่ายเพลงอย่าง Ed Banger Records, Digitalism, Justice และอีกมากมายมหาศาล) จนถึงทุกวันนี้พวกเขายิ่งใหญ่เหลือเกิน

คอนเสิร์ท NEVEREVERLAND นี้เป็นส่วนหนึ่งของ การทัวร์รอบโลกของพวกเขา ประกอบ กับการออกอัลบั้มบันทึกการแสงสดชื่อ Alive 2007 โดยเดินทางไป ตามหัวเมืองของประเทศต่างๆ เช่น อิตาลี, อเมริกา, เม็กซิโก อังกฤษ, ญี่ปุ่น โดยมาสิ้นสุดที่ออสเตรเลีย (เมลเบิร์น, เพิร์ธ บริสเบน และซิดนีย์) ก่อนที่พวกเขาจะหยุดพัก และ ออกผลงานใหม่ๆ ให้พวกเราฟังเร็วๆนี้ จนกว่าจะถึงเวลานั้น ใครก็ได้ช่วยพาพวกเขามาบ้านเราที !!!

ใน หนังสือของ คมสัน นันทจิต เขียนไว้ว่า ในพจนานุกรมของ คนพเนจร เมื่อเปิดพบคำว่า “หน้าร้อน” แล้ว คำถัดไปมักจะเป็นคำว่า “การเดินทาง” เสมอ และหากจะมี สถานที่แห่งหนึ่ง เพื่อออกเดินทางท่องเที่ยวละไม แล้วละก็ ประเทศออสเตรเลีย คงเป็นหนึ่งสถานที่ๆ ฤดูร้อน ของที่นี่ดูเหมือนจะยาวนานกว่าปกติเล็กน้อย ออสเตรเลีย เป็นหนึ่งในประเทศ ที่มีงานเทศกาลศิลปะ, วัฒนธรรม - ไลฟ์สไตล์ และดนตรีมากมาย รวมไปถึงการแข่งขันกีฬารายการใหญ่ เช่น เทนนิส, รถแข่ง, รักบี้ ฯลฯ ทั้งระดับท้องถิ่น หรือในระดับชาติ และเป้าหมายของการเดินทางครั้งนี้ของเราอยู่งาน Future Music Festival 2008

งาน เทศการ Future Music Festival (FMF) นี้ถูกจัดขึ้นตามหัวเมืองใหญ่ทั่วประเทศ คือเมือง Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Brisbane และ Adelaide ที่ดำเนินการโดย Future Entertainment ออแกไนซ์/ บริษัทบันเทิงครบวงจรชื่อดังของประเทศ บนพื้นฐานแนวคิดที่จะจัดงานดนตรีที่รวบรวมเอาซูเปอร์สตาร ์ของดนตรีอิเลคโทรนิค ระดับโลกและ จาก พื้นถิ่นหลากรูปแบบ มาเปิดการแสดงร่วมกันหลายเวที, แสงสีแสงตระ การตา, ในช่วงเวลาดีๆ ภายใต้แสงแดด, ฝูงชนที่ชูมือกู่ร้อง เต็มไปด้วย ความพึงพอใจไปกับบทเพลงไพเราะ, จังหวะดนตรีเต้นรำแนว House, Progressive, Indie/ Electro, Trance, Ambient, Minimal, Breaks, Drum n’ Bass, Techno แสนสนุก

Line up ที่มาในงานนี้ได้แก่ Josh Wink, John Digweed, Roger Sanchez, Sven Vath, Who Made Who, Dirty South, The Black Ghots, Midnight Juggernauts, Riot In Belgium, Felix Da Housecat, X-Press 2, Evil 9 และอีกยาวเหยียดมากมาย โดยมี สองศรีพี่น้องพลังเคมี The Chemical Brothers เป็น Head line

งาน จัดกันตั้งแต่เที่ยงวันยันเที่ยงคืน ณ Garden of Unearthly Delights สวนสาธารณะ, สวนสนุก และสวนศิลปะขนาดใหญ่ประจำเมืองที่ประกอบไปด้วย โรงหนัง, Lounge, ชิงช้าสวรรค์, เครื่องเล่นผาดโผน และเวทีการแสดงต่างๆ มากมายที่ถูกจัดเตรียมไว้ให้พร้อมสำหรับงาน FMF ครั้งนี้

"เพราะอากาศที่ร้อนจัดกว่า 40 องศา แต่ผู้คน ที่มีใจรักในเสียงเพลงก็ยังเดินทางมาร่วมงานกันอย่างล้นหลาม"

ภาย ในงานแบ่งเป็นโซนต่างๆ กว้างขวางจนเราเดินไม่ทั่วถึงเพราะอากาศที่ร้อนจัด กว่า 40 องศา แต่ผู้คนที่มีใจรักในเสียงเพลงก็ยังเดินทางมาร่วมงานกันอย่างล้นหลาม โซนเด่นๆ ที่เราชอบคงเป็น Silent Disco ซึ่งก็คือเต๊นท์ที่จำลองเป็นดิสโก้เธค แต่จะไม่ได้ยินดังใดๆ นอกจากเราจะสวม Head Set เพื่อรับฟังเพลงจากดีเจที่ส่งสัญญาณผ่านคลื่นวิทยุ ความสนุก คงเป็นเวลาที่ คนตะโกนคุยกันเพราะ ลืมว่าใส่หูฟังขนาดใหญ่อยู่ บ้างก็ร้องตามเสียงหลงดังแบบไม่รู้ตัว (ทำให้เราเข้าใจว่า แม้แต่ฝรั่ง ก็ร้องเพลงฝรั่งดำน้ำเช่นกัน) และบางคนก็จะแสดงท่าทางดื่มด่ำ อินไปกับบทเพลงซะจนน่าหมั่นไส้

ไฮไลท์มีมากมายเกินจะบรรยาย ทั้งฝุ่น, ควัน, แดดเผา, น้ำดื่มราคาแพง (แต่เบียร์ถูก!), ฝรั่งตัวเหม็น, คิวซื้อมีทพายยาวเหยียด (อาหารประจำชาติออสเตรเลียแสนอร่อย) ไปจนถึงคนเมาแล้วเพี้ยน ไม่ได้ทำให้เราและผองเพื่อนท้อแท้แต่อย่างใด

ติดตาม ดูวงโปรดไล่เรียงกันไปจนพระอาทิตย์ลาลับขอบฟ้าไป (กินเวลาประมาณเกือบสามทุ่ม) ก็ถึงเวลาที่เรารอคอยเมื่อสองหนุ่ม Tom และ Ed แห่ง The Chemical Brothers ปรากฏตัวขึ้น ฝูงคนก็เฮสนั่น และเต้นระบำไปกับดนตรี Electronic/ Breakbeat สุดล้ำ ดนตรีของพวกเขานั้น แม้จะเป็นดนตรี Electronic ที่ถูกเรียบเรียงด้วย Synthesizer หรือเครื่องมือดิจิตอลต่างๆ แต่ก็มีอิทธิพลของความ เป็นดนตรีร็อคอยู่ค่อนข้างสูง เพลงอย่าง Block Rockin Beats ที่มีส่วนผสมของท่อน Break และเสียงเบสสุดเท่กับ เสียง Synth สากๆ ก็แรงกระแทกกระทั้นพอจะฟาดให้หัวแตกได้ สร้างปรากฏการณ์ใหม่ๆ และเป็นอิทธิพลกับวงดนตรีรุ่นๆหลังอย่างๆ Justice, Soulwax, Vanshe ฯลฯ

ใน ขณะที่วงอย่าง Daft Punk และวงลูกหลานยุค Nu Rave ต่างแต่งตัวและสร้างภาพ ลักษณ์ แก่นเซี้ยวซ่า สีสันสะท้อนแสง ทั้งคู่กลับแต่งตัวอย่างเรียบง่าย แฝงตัวก้มๆเงยๆ ทำตัวยุ่งอยู่ภายใต้แผงคีย์บอร์ด และอุปกรณ์เอฟเฟคกองพะเนิน แต่ดนตรีเยี่ยมๆ กับ ภาพวิชชวล และระบบไฟเอเฟค์ก็รุนแรง และทำให้เราตาค้าง และตกอยู่ในภวังค์ เมื่อในช่วงหลังพวกเขาซัด เพลงสุดหลอน Psychedelic อย่าง Setting Sun, Private Psychedelic Reel ให้แฟนเพลงของพวกเขา Get High กันโดยไม่ต้องใช้ยา

เป็น อีกครั้งที่การเดินทางแสนไกล, การนับวันรอคอย, การเดินทางไกลหลายพันไมล์, การต่อคิวยาวเหยียด และเบียดเสียดกับผู้คนคับคั่ง ไม่เคยมีความหมายเท่านี้มาก่อน และหน้าร้อนปีนี้คงเป็นปีที่เราจะจดจำไปแสนนาน

หลังจากที่อัลบั้ม Falling off the Lavender Bridge วางแผงเมื่อต้นปีที่ผ่านมาบางทีนี่อาจจะเป็นปกอัลบั้มแห่งปี 2008 สำหรับเราอย่างไม่ต้องสงสัย เมื่อปกแผ่นเป็นรูปของหนุ่มผิวสี หน้าตาไม่ปกติใส่เสื้อสีแดงสด บน พื้นหลังสีฟ้าใส ช่างกล้าและมั่นใจในตัวเองไม่น้อย

ในช่วงต้นปี 2007 Dev ได้ออกทัวร์สนับสนุนและร่วมแจมบนเวทีเดียวกันกับวงดนตรีต่างๆ มากมายเช่น Bright Eyes, Final Fantasy, Watrick Wolf, Good Shoes ตามเทศกาลดนตรีทั่วสหราชอาณาจักร เพื่อสร้างสมประสบการณ์ และแต่งเพลง อันทำให้เขาเริ่มเป็นที่รู้จักจากแฟนเพลงและจากซิงเกิ้ลที่ทยอยปล่อยออกมาอย่างช้าๆ (Galaxy of The Lost, Midnight Surprise และ Tell Me What It’s Worth) จนกระทั่งเมื่อสบโอกาสเขาจึงได้ทำผลงานอัลบั้มเต็มๆเสียที

ผลงานในอัลบั้ม Falling Off the Lavender Bridge นี้บันทึกเสียงกันที Omaha, Nebraska ประเทศสหรัฐอเมริกาโดยได้รับการช่วยเหลือจากผองเพื่อนในวงการดนตรีที่ตั้งรกรากอยู่ย่านนั้นอย่าง The Faint, Bright Eyes และนักร้องรับเชิญจากวง Tilly and the Wall และ Emmy The Great ผลลัพท์ที่ได้คือผลงานเพลงสุดไพเราะเพราะพริ้ง ฟังเพลินทั้งอัลบั้ม

Heralded as a musical phenomenon for their ground breaking live shows and unique blend of heavy soul/drum and bass, Shapeshifter are a gang of five musicians that you need to tune your eyes and ears into.

Their reputation as pioneers of modern music was built by a distinctive approach to electronic music which had previously been restricted to computer based studio musicians and has earned them widespread critical acclaim. Can you imagine a drummer thumping down beats with ghost notes that aren’t so ghostly, a saxophonist, percussionist, guitarist, keyboardist and a soulful lyricist that would put a smile across Marvin Gaye’s face?

Their third studio album, Soulstice was released in August 2006, it entered the New Zealand national charts at remarkable Number 4 and spent over 2 months in the top 20, they also reached number 1 on the independent charts. In 2006 they were awarded Best Live Act, Song of the Year for “Bring Change” and Album of the Year for Soulstice. Early 2007 saw Shapeshifter release Soulstice in Australia and the Europe with the first run of albums selling out in just 5 days. Not bad for “JUST” a drum and Bass group ….right?

Last month Supersub’s whacked-out reporter, Errin Fawcett caught up with Shapeshifter’s bass player and keyboardist, Nick Robinson to find out what makes the band TICK.

First of all could you describe your sound in your own words?
Heavy Soul deep fried in Deep drum and bass, with a sprinkle of Hip hop, dub and a drizzle of jazz…then smoked in a creamy layer of reggae sauce.

Ummm…sounds delicious

The press in the UK seem to think that Drum and Bass is dead. What do you think about this?
I hadn’t thought about it too much…but I’m not sure that any music in this modern age will die like it did in the 20th century. There seems to be new movements and developments in all music…from Hip Hop to Country. I remember when Rock and Roll was dying...Techno and Hip Hop were taking over...but it never happened...Rock lives on stronger than ever! Drum and Bass to me is divided into two groups, the stuff I like and the stuff that I think is shit, and that’s the same for all music. There's good music and shit music in everyone’s eyes. Drum and Bass in New Zealand is bigger than it’s ever been amongst 18 yr olds.

What are your thoughts on the current state of music with so much being downloaded from the net (illegally) ?
Well, it could all turn into a pile of shit..but I have a feeling there'll be some internet police in about 5-10 years...proper ones. It’s kind of like the Wild West at the moment, a lawless society and that can’t go on for ever. Personally I don’t know, I’m sure we've lost money from people downloading our music but my main concern is spreading our music around, not to make money. I think downloading is sometimes a good way to find out about music that’s not playing constantly on commercial radio and TV. For example, I (shhhhhh…don’t tell anybody) downloaded a couple of MF Doom tracks off limewire. I grew to love his music and now I must have at least 4 MF Doom cds and about 5 of his records. That’s a lot of money I’ve spent because I downloaded 2 or 3 songs to check him out. People enjoy buying music and they enjoy collecting it. Forget the people who don’t like to look at covers and inlays, the people who only like looking at how many mp3s they have in their library, and telling people all about it. We make music for the music lovers…and even if they don’t end up buying a real copy, they still probably come to the shows.

The band live across Aotearoa (NZ) and Australia. How difficult is this as a band? And how often do you get together?
It doesn’t seem to affect us, well if anything it’s a positive thing. We spend about half the year together touring, basically living on top of each other, so its nice once its over to go home and get some space. It’s great flying in to start tours from all over the place, catching up with everyone, everyone gets there smart mouth on and it ends up being classic funny ole time. Then we go home to our own lives. I look forward to seeing all the boys before a tour; I think living apart has maybe kept us as best friends in a weird way.

Do you have a busy tour schedule planned for 2008?
We did have but have since postponed so we can record our new album. We will be going to Europe in the middle of the year but apart from that not much else on the cards .

You guys are constantly mixing up where you perform and who you perform with. I myself saw you perform at the New Years Eve ‘Big Drop Off’ gig with Ladi 6 and dub/reggae outfit, Fat Freddy’s Drop. Last year you performed with an orchestra and shared the stage with metal heads, Tool during their tour of Australia. Why the mixture of different music genres? Do you enjoy this more than playing a strictly Drum and Bass festival?
We all love pretty much every form of music there is..all 5 of us are serious music junkies. Its all we talk about, its an obsession. So we appreciate all flavors, and I know I enjoy having an open mind and being surprised into something new. So we get a lot of inspiration from all kinds of bands. Its nice to play alongside other genres too, for example we love the challenge of playing those mellow daytime slots, where there might be a folk artist before, and the crowd is a sleepy non rave crowd. We have to reach for different tricks out of the bag, play differently than we would if we were coming on at 2am in a sweaty bangin low roof club scene. Those Drum and Bass gigs are an equal level of fun, just different. One of my favourite gigs ever musically was in Byron Bay years ago, we were opening for someone, and we had to start while everyone was still having dinner. SO we smoked a big dooob and had the most soulful moody beautiful jam and were kind of forced into adapting to the scenario. Mix it up and mash it up.

How did performing with Tool come about and what is your best memory of that night?
Tool were performing a side show in Melbourne during the Big Day Out tour, and they were required to have a support band so the 'heavy metal crowd' wouldn’t grow unruly before Tool came on...I guess there's some intense Tool fans somewhere. They picked us to open for some reason or another. I heard a rumor their chef was a kiwi guy, spreading the good word! My best memory of the night was probably having Danny (Tool's drummer) jumping and whoop whooping round on the side of the stage right beside me, I was trying not to look at him thinking "nah that’s not him" when I looked again I realized that really was him. Then I nervously stumbled thru the rest of the gig. The Tool guys were real nice.

Did the audience respond well to a Kiwi Drum and Bass outfit opening?
It was nerve racking, but we decided to play our heaviest smashing kind of songs, and in between songs just talked up tool rather than ourselves. I think they liked it?

You guys all seem to have solo projects happening. Are there any releases due out soon? Do you feel that having solo projects helps retain your versatility in style?
Yes Devin is in the later stages of finishing his next Pacific Heights release, which I’ve heard some of and its some freaky shit! Look out for that one coming soon. Also we got some vinyl releases 7" packs of various truetone artists including pacific heights, 10" packs, of the same. Its important to have these outlets, its hard when there are 5 headstrong guys writing music. Its like a raging river you can get swept along and songs can end up where you don’t like them anymore. You have to have a lot of give and take, and a lot of trust in others taste in music. We do have a policy that we all have to like an idea or it gets scrapped. Writing by yourself is quick and fun, and you can explore crazier ideas and develop your own skills faster, which in turn can be applied back to Shapeshifter which is all of our main focus.

What’s the next vinyl release, and who is on the mixing boards this time around? A remix of ‘ONE’ perhaps?
Yeah coming out soon we’ve got ‘Electric Dream’ remix from State of Mind, and also ‘One’, with a remix from D-bridge.

So the new album will not be out until late this year then? What can we expect?
There’s no due date yet... giving a due date for any album is just a fat lie. But I would say early next year. We have all been discussing album stuff, and what might come out in the end, and it’s hard to know. We will just write the best songs we can I suppose. We have made a few jumps in our recording abilities, and we will be recording the album in a proper studio, like a band, not in a stinky little bedroom like we once would have done. This album is going to be more live, more experimental, and even more raw then ever before.

Will there be any collaboration’s on the next album?
Last album we jammed with lady 6 and Killa Puha, and those two individuals are nuts to work with in the studio. So fast and so professional. Lady turned up with nothing, sat in front of the speakers listened to her backing track twice then said "sweet lets do it" and she'd written music and lyrics just like that to 'In the Rain' (the bands most popular track yet). KP (Killa Puha) made us record his vocals until 9 in the morning; he just wouldn’t stop until he got it perfect. SO working with those two would be great but nothing has been finalized yet. Lady 6's partner in crime 'Parks' is someone we would love to have on the album too. But it all depends so much on the songs themselves, what we feel they need, who would suit what song.

Is there an Asian tour on the books? And can we expect you guys in Bangkok anytime soon?
We would love to tour Asia… nearly more then anywhere else but we haven’t quite come up with a way to get there yet...meaning we need to be asked to play somewhere first to build a following. It just costs too much to get everyone there when we're not guaranteed that anyone will know who Shapeshifter are. So if there’s anyone reading that wants to put on a gig, help us come over and just break even, bring it on!!

Is there one group that you would love to share the stage with?
There are so many. That’s a hard question. Maybe Cinematic Orchestra

Is there a stage that you would love to perform on but haven’t yet?
We like the idea of playing in little famous clubs that have had legends there in the past like the basement in Sydney, there is some history there! And we played the electric ballroom in London which had the same vibe. We are about to play at Shepherds Bush in London which we have been wishing we could do for ages. I think Bob Marley played there.

What was your biggest memory of 07?
Probably our sept-october Australasian-European tour, that was a funny ole time. We had good gigs, we sold out 2 quite big shows in London, and the same in Amsterdam. We finished the tour with a week holidaying in Amsterdam and it was Madness. We discovered all these amazing record shops, and then traveled to Rotterdam and found even more…they were like basements full of old records. Apparently Holland is where Europe sends its excess vinyl. Yeah that’s a good memory.

Who do you think will be (and deserves to be) the next big thing in Drum and Bass?
I really like 'State of Mind' ...they breathe such creative life into everything they do.

Who do you think will be the next group to come out of NZ?
Maybe Liam Finn? Im not sure, Fat Freddy's Drop.. i cant say because I don’t live there...but look out for the Electric Confectionaries they’re good, The Little Bushman (Maxwell from Trinity Roots), Kora, Tiki Taane (Salmonella Dub)...its hard to say coz its not about just being good - there has to be some luck involved too. Being in the right place at the right time, having good management.

Back when the funkiest place to hang out on RCA was Astra, Supersub spent many a night there dancing amongst the sweaty crowds to the latest electro tunes spun by pioneering Thai and international djs. One particular night that stands out was towards the end of Astra's tenure, when Dudesweet organized a formidable lineup of live acts and of course the DJ that everyone came to see, Reuben Wu of Ladytron fame. We were treated to an awesome night, kicking off with the energetic electro sounds of local faves, Cyndi Seui, with special guests Joey Boy and Yokee Playboy. For dance enthusiasts however, this was merely a warm up, as much of the crowd was eagerly awaiting the arrival of Reuben Wu on the decks.

Rueben had played in Bangkok the year before at the now defunct Time Out club, and on his most recent trip, the crowd at Astra certainly showed an affinity for his eclectic style and thumping, danceable beats. Some familiar tunes along the lines of Placebo and Bloc Party were to be heard, but for the most part, Reuben let loose with an assortment of electroclash inspired rock remixes. Supersub was lucky enough to catch up with Reuben straight after his three-hour set. We sat down with him on Astra's comfy upstairs couch and asked a few quick questions over a gin and tonic.

What do think of Bangkok crowds?
Great!

Last time you played at Time Out (the now defunct RCA club) and you were great there too.
Yeah, I remember being in the neighbourhood. That was lots of fun.

What brought you to Bkk this time?
My friend Onsiri, she runs the Dudesweet nights with a few others, invited me to come. Hopefully they'll do the live show when we're over here next.

"I'm not always trying to make people dance"

How does the music you play with Ladytron differ from your live set?
Well, I'm not always trying to make people dance (with Ladytron). I mean we're trying to make people dance, trying to make people feel sad, make people fall in love, that kind of thing. It's not all dance stuff. We try to take them on a journey.

We think the crowd went on an emotional journey tonight.
Really?

Yeah, they loved it out on the dance floor.
Great. Me too.

What kind of music do you play at home?
Probably not dance stuff. Mostly depressing, sad music.

Really? We're surprised! Any bands in particular?
Well as a musician I like all kinds of music, but when you're playing in a club you have to make people dance and it's not your own kind of stuff, to play sad stuff. You're getting paid to play happy music. It's about playing happy music, and right now I'm very happy! I can be sad by myself.

So can we expect you back in Bkk any time soon?
Yes!

หนังสารคดี เรื่องเยี่ยมของผู้กำกับชาวอังกฤษ มาร์ค ซิงเก้อร์ ที่แสดงให้เห็นวิถีการใข้ชีวิตที่เราไม่สามารถ จินตนาการได้

Have you ever bought a various artists hit CD (like back to mine, fabriclive, ministry of sound annual hit something CD)? And it wasn't quite as good as you thought it would be by the songs listed on the cover!

Have you ever thought about making your own compilation CD? Well, this generation is about DIY generation anyway - DIY music, DIY t-shirt or clothes, DIY film, DIY company (we're not employees anymore), DIY phone (hacked apple's iphone), DIY magazine (well, you know it), organize your own party, blah blah blah

Compilation or mixtape or love-tape (that you made for your girlfriend when you were a teenager) or whatever you wanna call it. Here we're presenting a playlist of songs as a compilation CD that we think sounds good together in one CD (or maybe it doesn't sound good for someone depending on how you like it).

Anyway as we know people have different ideas, we can't be thinking the same in everything so..we challenge "YOU" to send us your best song list of a compilation cd (don't send us a CD - just a list of songs) and let the reader choose who's the best! and get a little award from us.

Conditions
- All song have to be listed - song name, band, album, version or featuring who, - All song listed have to fit in one CD / 70 minutes in audio format or 700 Mb - You don't need DJ mixing skills to make this playlist - anyone can join in (even some DJs make crappy mix tapes)

This little joint is what we like to call a restobar. For those of you who are yet to have their caffeine hit for the day, a restobar is generally a restaurant slash bar where you can get a taste of everything from whiskey and beer, som tum and fries, dynamic music and a fun atmosphere. Much like our beloved Pla Dip restaurant down soi Ari, The Tube has an industrial feel with its concrete walls and flooring. The restobar is brought to life with vibrant art that is sprawled throughout. This leaves just enough room to shake your booty.

What makes this spot stick out like a sore thumb is the music that draws a funky crowd of local DJs, artists and funksters. The majority of the pubs and bars in this area play mind numbing pop music and the occasional hip pop tune straight from Top of the Pop’s. A delightful mix of electronic bleeps and beeps, house and indie rock gets revilers swinging and gyrating inside and out. The “Japanese drum and bass chief” (well that’s what we like to call him) presents a menu of basic Thai eats and drinks at reasonable prices.

Because of its size we suggest gathering your friends together and going early during the weekends to acquire a seat. Our only dislike - the music next door occasionally recoils off the concrete wall opposite and bounces into The Tube – This can be a little frustrating. Overall: The Tube is a great little joint for starting your night off on the right foot.
